Responsive Collaborative- Primary Research

To start this brief I thought it would be best to do some primary research. I headed down to Morrisons and Sainsburys to look at Taylors Coffee and other brands of coffee for some ideas on packaging and design and to see what else is on the market.

Jars

The shape of the jar above is interesting as it has a soft curve in it. They are just glass jars with stickers on the front, with the classic nescafe branding.

This one was again glass but didn't look it as it was wrapped in black packaging. The design of it looks smooth and classic using very obvious coffee colours.

This jar is cute and fits in the hand nicely, I like the colour palate of this, the colours have been chosen well to go with the colour of the coffee.

I didn't like this jar at all, I like the tin feel it has however I don't really like the design that much, this is the cheapest option for ground coffee and I think you can tell.

Large round tubs from nescafe a big coffee brand, these tubs are suppose to be something you refill, but personally I don't like the design enough to keep refilling this.

This is the classic and widely recognised nescafe jar, it is recognised everywhere not just because of the design but because of the shape of the actual jar as well.

Packets

Here is the bright and colourful Taylors coffee that really stands out when on the shelf.

This design is more subtle and looks very classy

I noticed on this design the font on the 'Taylors' logo has actually changed, this packet is for decafe and they have added serifs to the logo. I really like the painted hand made feel to this packet, I think this suits the family business ethic well.

This is a packet design for nescafe's 3 in one coffee sachets, I have noticed that nescafe uses a lot of photograph within their design where as Taylors coffee uses a lot of illustration to keep their designs unique.

The patterns on this packet are interesting, they are quite oriental.

This is one of Morrisons own packet designs, the type seems quite friendly and the colours really portray organic coffee well.

You can tell this is Costas design immediately because of the colours used and the simple vector design.

The design on starbucks is quite african on the packet on the left, the subtle patterns work well and the illustrations are well suited.

This is a high end 'signature' packet from Morrisons, it has a shine foil texture with a simple triangle pattern. The deep blue colour makes it look more expensive as blue is quite a royal colour.

Shelves

I looked at the product placement of Taylors coffee in both Morrisons and Saisburys. The product didn't stand out as much as I expected however it does look more expensive that many of the other brands of ground coffee. The dark designs work well with the banner of colour making it instantly recognisable as Taylors coffee.
